Why this venue works beautifully

Tanglewood Estate is at Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula, on more than 100 acres of bushland with century-old eucalypts running across the property. Three event spaces operate on site: the Barn for receptions up to 200 seated, the Winery for 120 seated, and the Studio for cocktail-format weddings of around 70 standing. A century-old chapel sits in the trees as the lead ceremony position, and the gardens give multiple alternate outdoor settings with sea views from the higher elevations.

Most Mornington Peninsula wedding venues sit on small estates (5 to 20 acres) and use neighbouring vineyard or coastal infrastructure to extend the visual range. Tanglewood’s 100-plus acres mean the property carries its own visual scale without borrowing from adjacent properties. Couples planning longer photo windows and multi-location portrait sets get more out of the address than couples treating it as a single-room venue. The chapel-plus-gardens-plus-Barn sequence runs as a continuous experience instead of a single-room booking.

How we’d photograph it

Use the elevation change for two-mood portraits. The lower property zones sit under heavy canopy with bushland mood; the higher gardens open to sea-view horizon. Walking between them inside one portrait session gives the album a clear visual contrast without needing two venues.

The chapel building reads strongest framed by surrounding eucalypts; once 100 guests are inside, the architectural exterior gets blocked by arrival activity. Shoot the chapel from outside before the ceremony.

The Bass Strait horizon view is the property’s distance shot. Couples skipping a pre-sunset portrait block at the high garden usually regret the album shape afterwards.

The arrival road runs through bushland for several hundred metres before the buildings appear. A one-minute portrait stop along the long driveway delivers a frame that repeats nowhere else on the property.

Merricks North sits about 90 minutes from Melbourne in normal Saturday traffic, and the property’s last kilometre is unsealed road. Communicate this to guests so arrival timing doesn’t compress the ceremony schedule.
