The Baths

The Baths is a restaurant and function venue built over the water at Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, 90 minutes south of Melbourne. The building sits on a jetty above Port Phillip Bay, with the calmer Sorrento front beach beside it. The architecture is simple and service-first; the water is doing the aesthetic work.

The bay does most of the portrait lifting. Shoot from the jetty looking back toward the restaurant for the establishing frame, then walk the couple onto the sand for waterline portraits. The gallery needs both compositions; without the wide jetty context, the bay frames lose their location, and without the sand frames, the water stays abstract.

Sorrento's built context adds variety outside the venue. The ocean-road end of town has limestone buildings, heritage shopfronts, and small laneways within a few minutes on foot. Use that walk for coverage that sits between the venue's water frames and a straight beach gallery; the mix keeps the day reading as a Sorrento wedding, not a generic waterfront.

West-facing positioning anchors the day's photography to sunset over the bay. The final 40 minutes before the sun crosses the opposite shore put warm amber across the water and into the restaurant's glazing. Post-sunset stays strong too: the open bay holds light longer than inland positions, buying another 20 minutes of usable window. Schedule portraits tight to that bracket.
